SPACE CAPSULE

  • Space capsules allow astronauts to "park" somewhere in space.
  • Space capsules are small and there is not a lot of room for the astronauts to move around inside.
  • Space capsules have radios and computers so the astronauts can keep in touch with Earth. They also have cameras and windows so the astronauts can see outside the capsule.

SPACE STATION

  • Did you know that people can live in space for months or even years at a time? A space station is home for astronauts when they need to stay in space for a long time to complete their mission.
  • The international space station. or ISS, is as big as a soccer field and has a large crane arm on the outside that astronauts can operate from inside the station.
  • Most of the ISS was built by astronauts - while they were in space.
  • The ISS has 2 bathrooms, some gym equipment and has as much room as a six bedroom house.
  • It's very important for astronauts to get exercise when they are in space to keep their bones and muscles strong.

SPACE SHUTTLE

  • The space shuttle was the first space vehicle that could go into space over and over again.
  • There were five space shuttles in all and they launched on 135 space missions!
  • A space shuttle lifted off with the help of two solid rocket boosters and three main engines

ASTRONAUT

  • Astronauts go into space to explore, do experiments and learn more about space
  • Astronauts spacesuits give them air to breathe and protection from being hurt in space and also help them do work outside the spacecraft. A tool belt and straps connected to the suit keep tools from floating away.
  • Spacesuits can even have TV cameras attached to them. Taking videos of all the astronauts work!
  • Astronauts must go to school and then practice for many years before they are allowed to fly in a spacecraft.
  • Astronauts sleep in sleeping bags tied to the wall so they don't float around.
  • The word "astronaut" comes from two Greek words that means "star sailor".
